Off top of me head - such problems are often symptomatic of lack of resources (usu memory)

... some versions of Windows have only a limited memory area for holding indexes [lookups] to resources like icons.

The NT family (NT / W2K / XP Professional) is more robust than the 9x family (95, 98, Me, XP Home [I think]) and has fewer of these silly limitations.

umm - also have you got the latest drivers for your video card?

My machines have a gig of RAM but I still occasionally see this problem when I am stressing them (no reboot for yonks and a zillion applications on the go).

Software is often written so that it will "fail" to a default value - and I guess in a resource constrained scenario that is why the explorer icon appears.

HTH.

: any idea why the icons in my favourite menu do not remain as they were originally, but turn into explorer icons! within a couple of days!
: I do have a choice of icons - in the favourites menu choice of 4 alternate icons or 'browse', ('explorer' icon is marked with a red star). But i want the originals to remain. eg ADVFN with it's ascending black bar graph.
